EASING OF SMOKING RESTRICTIONS IN CROATIA PDF Print E-mail

CROATIAN GOVERNMENT CONSIDERS EASING SMOKING RESTRICTIONS

The Croatian government is considering easing smoking restrictions after complaints from restaurant and bar owners. They have reported 80 per cent business losses due to the ban, Croatian Health Minister Darko Milinovic said today.
Croatia began enforcing a ban on smoking in most indoor areas and public places in May this year. Owners of bars and restaurants complained that the ban was keeping most customers away. The owners say the decline is 80 per cent, but official statistics are still unavailable. The effects are especially visible in the big shopping centres where there are no balconies or open-air terraces for smokers, and where the first bars have closed in recent weeks.
Milinovic told reporters in Zagreb that changes would be made to the smoking law, but he did not specify what those changes would be or whether they would allow smoking again in restaurants.
He added: "I still believe that the losses restaurant owners reported have mostly to do with the economic crisis and not the ban on smoking."
An estimated 25-30 per cent of Croatia's 4.5 million people smoke. Croatia was hit hard by economic crisis. The country's gross domestic product fell 6.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2009, its biggest drop in years.

PENINSULA PELJESAC BRIDGE PDF Print E-mail

Connecting Peljesac peninsula via road with the rest of the country

Description: 2,374 meters long bridge, 55 meters high and 21 meters wide ensuring 4 traffic tracks. The project is worth approximately 265 million euros and it will be financed by the Croatian Roads and by loans from the European Investment Banks.

Timeline:

The Peljesac bridge project continues regardless of the crises. The project time frame has only be prolonged but not canceled.

Significance:
- More effective linkage to Southern Croatia, Dubrovnik County; not taking  passage through Bosnia and Herzegovina.
- Time efficient and cost effective route since the bridge will cut down the distance for travelers going from Peljesac to Dubrovnik.
- Better promotion of Peljesac peninsula, since it will become a more frequent spot.
- Significant impact on the property prices on the Peljesac peninsula but primarily on the increase in the number of investments on the peninsula

TUNNEL SVETI ILIJA PDF Print E-mail
Objective: To connect Inland Dalmatia and the A1 highway output with the coastline

Description: 4,045 meters of length, located in Mt.Biokovo, starting point Rastovac; and Bast (on the Makarska Riviera) as final point. The project is worth approximately 316 million kuna and that includes only hard works. The total cost for air fans, light system and tunnel decoration are still not projected.

Timeline: At the moment 7 meters of tunnel are made per day. June 2010 as an opening date.

Significance:
- Sveti Ilija tunnel is of a great significance for the entire region of Central and South Dalmatia primarily because it will connect the highway output directly with the coastline; enabling easier linkage to highway when traveling to/from Dubrovnik, Zagreb, Rijeka and the rest of the West Europe.
- The area of Inland Dalmatia will result with an impulsive increase in property investment interest and that is primarily due to the less expensive property (land) prices and the proximity of the sea (only 10 minutes drive through the tunnel).

EUROPEAN UNION MEMBERSHIPS PDF Print E-mail

Description: Applied for EU membership in 2003.  Completion of all chapters projected for the first part of 2010.

Recent events:
Croatia Could Enter EU In First Half Of 2010.  Croatia's entry into the European Union could occur within
the first half of 2010, according to statements made by European Commission and Croatian officials. The ex-Yugoslav republic's entry into the European Union has been stalled this summer, largely due to a longstanding  maritime border dispute with neighboring Slovenia. European Commissioner Olli Rehn cited several conditions that Croatia must meet, such as resolving the border dispute with Slovenia, improving its judiciary, cooperating with the International Criminal Tribunal for ex-Yugoslavia and reforming its dockyards. If these conditions are met, "We can envisage completing negotiations in the first half of 2010," Rehn told the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee in Brussels. Croatian Chief Negotiator Vladimir Drobnjak said in an interview  much of the work aligning Croatia's legal framework with European Union standards has already been completed. "I can say with confidence we have entered the final stage of the process," Drobnjak said. Once the dispute with Slovenia has been worked out, Croatia will be able to wrap up the accession process in well under a year, he said.

Timeline: Expected 2010.

Significance: Free trade zone, labor movements, open market, European Union funds.
